The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) is the main UK government agency for funding research and training in engineering and the physical sciences, investing around £740m a year in a broad range of subjects - from mathematics to materials science, and from information technology to structural engineering.
Informatics Ventures
For over half a century Scotland has consistently demonstrated global leadership in Computer Science research, with our research cluster rivalling Boston, Pittsburgh, Kyoto and Silicon Valley. Informatics Ventures in Edinburgh is confirmed as the best Computer Science department in the United Kingdom and one of Europe's largest research centres. But despite this thought leadership, Scotland has never produced a global software company of scale. Informatics Ventures is ambitiously trying to change this through nurturing an entrepreneurial ecosystem where positive attitudes, skills and networks thrive. Informatics Ventures is a partnership of the University of Edinburgh, Scottish Enterprise and the European Regional Development Fund.
Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC)
Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) is the UK's lead funding agency for academic research and training in the non-clinical life sciences. It invests around £470 million a year in research on plants, microbes, animals (including humans), and tools and technology underpinning biological research. Research is funded from the level of molecules and cells, to tissues, whole organisms, & populations.
Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)
The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) are an independent organisation, established by Royal Charter, but receive most of their funding through the Government's Office of Science and Technology. Their budget of more than £100 million funds over 2,500 researchers in academic institutions and policy research institutes throughout the UK. They also support more than 2,000 postgraduate students.
University of Sussex
The University of Sussex Business & Enterprise Team puts energy into increasing the University's collaborative relationships with business and community organisations in Sussex, as well as nationally and internationally. Their core aim in building these partnerships is to contribute to the University's vision of excellence by bringing greater opportunities for increased research income, consultancy provision, and access to University expertise, development of an entrepreneurial culture, and increased awareness of employer needs.
